The Slark Hyperbaric Unit (SHU), located within the Navy Hospital in Devonport, Auckland, was officially opened by the Rt. Hon. Warren Cooper in 1990.
Named after the late Royal New Zealand Navy Surgeon Commodore Tony Slark, who was a pioneer in diving medicine research, our unit brings over 40 years of diving and hyperbaric medicine knowledge and experience to New Zealand's diving community. Without doubt, the unit will continue to be at the forefront in hyperbaric medicine expertise.

Inside the Hyperbaric Chamber
Our hyperbaric chamber is an independently controlled twin-locked horizontal multiplace chamber capable of treating five people simultaneously, or two prone. Built in Australia to both NATO and AS1210 Australian safety standards, our chamber is certified to 8.5 atmospheres, utilising compression generated from two 75kW Bauer rotary screw electric motors.
Wound Care Facility
The Navy Hospital and the Hyperbaric Unit can provide specialist wound care service with our fully equipped wound care clinic. The effect of HBOT on wound healing is objectively assessed using transcutaneous tissue oximetry measurement, performed in our fully equipped Transcutaneous Lab.
Lung Function Physiology Laboratory
Lung function spirometry and hypertonic saline provocation spirometry can be performed at the Hyperbaric Unit.
